Exam structure

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam has four independent sections: Reading (Lesen), Listening (Hören), Writing (Schreiben), and Speaking (Sprechen). You need at least 60% in each section to pass — a strong score in one section can't make up for a weak one elsewhere.

Strategy for each section

Reading: time management is everything. Read the questions first, then scan the text for the answers — don't get stuck on unfamiliar words. We've written a dedicated breakdown of the B1 Lesen format — all 5 Teile, with tips for each.

Listening: some recordings only play once. Underline the key words in each question before the audio starts, so you know exactly what to listen for. We've also got a detailed guide to the B1 Hören section — timing, question types, and what to watch for.

Writing: memorize your opening and closing lines for both formal and informal letters. A clear structure earns you points even if your vocabulary isn't perfect yet.

Speaking: practice in pairs, especially the joint-planning part. Natural reactions and genuinely responding to your partner matter more than sounding rehearsed.

This is a general strategy overview — we'll go deeper into each section in separate posts. You can also check out our experience with Speaking Teil 1 and Teil 2 — presentation and Q&A.

Good luck with your studying and your exam.
